Adding a teen driver?

Adding a teen driver to your auto policy is a big milestone—equal parts exciting and nerve-wracking. As an independent insurance agent, I talk with parents every day who are proud of their new driver but worried about safety and cost. The good news? With the right approach, adding a teen doesn’t have to break the bank or keep you up at night. It starts with understanding how insurers view teen drivers and making smart choices from day one.

Teen drivers typically increase premiums because they’re new to the road and statistically higher risk. That said, there are plenty of ways to soften the impact. Good student discounts, driver training programs, and choosing the right vehicle can all make a meaningful difference. I always encourage families to loop me in before the keys are handed over—sometimes a small change, like delaying an upgrade to a sportier car or adjusting coverage levels, can save hundreds of dollars a year.

Most importantly, adding a teen driver is a great time to review your entire policy. Are your liability limits high enough? Do you have the right deductibles in place? As an independent agent, I’m not tied to just one company, which means I can shop multiple carriers to find coverage that fits your family’s needs and budget. Teen drivers grow up fast—having the right insurance plan in place helps ensure they’re protected while they gain experience and confidence behind the wheel.
